Pagoda in a gravy bowl is my most recent mini sculpture, a needle felt pagoda sculpture, a pagoda in a gravy bowl set amongst the willow trees, jumping right out of the pattern on the bowl. It was so much fun to work on this quirky piece and mirror my needle felting to the design on the vintage willow pattern gravy boat. I needle felted the pagoda independently first then attached it onto the piece, as this was quite a large component to build up in felt. From this stage I felted the trees in situ on the gravy boat, letting them grow , taking shape organically whilst still adhering to the image on the gravy bowl. I wanted this representation to mirror the scene on the willow pattern on the vintage bowl. It was quite freeing to work with just the two colours, I found that I concentrated on the form with more precision. Pagoda in a gravy bowl sculpture measures 23cm x 21cm, and would sit beautifully on a windowsill or as a central table piece encouraging some dining conversation.
