Italian mountain cottage was conceived while I stayed at a retreat centre high in the Italian Alps, with breathtaking views, crisp cold air but inspiration for sketching. I spent days sketching in the area, choosing which sketches to then attempt in needle felt, this is one of them. A view looking across the mountains at a tiny chocolate box cottage immersed in the encroaching forest. I loved the process of creating this needle felted mountain cottage, I wondered what living there must be like, especially during the winter months. It was one of those villages with an ageing population, so there was a scheme to enable buyers to pay just £1000 for a property if they could bring it back to a good standard using another 40K. I couldn’t help but think it would be a very lonely existence high in the mountain area. The road down to the lake was nerve shattering , very windy and overlooking huge drops on the cliff face, not for the faint hearted. It would be an experience every time you had to go out to buy supplies down at the village far below. At the lake at the bottom of the valley there was more life and small shops for tourists, but take your life in your hands to get there… no not for me, they won’t be tempting me to buy for 1K . It made some of my colleagues at the retreat think about buying holiday homes….. much too isolated I would think. I hope my felted cottage piece gives this sense of isolation and quiet, tucked away behind the tall shadowy trees which engulf it and partially obscure it from view.This small piece Italian mountain cottage of a needle felted mountain cottage framed measures 25cm x 25cm, the actual felted area is13cm x 13cm.
